Break a leg as Jolene, a rebellious girl who makes the grave mistake of breaking the seal upon a cursed theater hiding a prison for demons inside. The theater’s seal holding back the darkness weakens until the evil trapped within takes Jolene’s mother hostage. Soon, twisted stories of humanity will begin to escape and wreak havoc upon the world.

Knock foes around the environment, bringing a set wall crashing down, or launching opponents into the band pit toward their demise. Jump, dash, and slash utilizing the powers sealed within mysterious character masks to strengthen Jolene’s stats and learn new abilities to build up visceral combo scores in each scenario. Traverse along dynamic 3D/2D camera-shifting perspectives with laser-sharp platforming controls throughout beautiful, hand-crafted theater sets.

Did you notice Medusa on Jolene’s jacket? Medusa is a figure from Greek mythology and a heroine of ancient theater plays. She symbolizes female power and wrath—characteristics that are also close to Jo.

Phantom Hellcat is a dynamic slasher-platformer with showy combos in a theatrical setting. When demons kidnap Jolene’s mother, the young woman must take the stage and save her—but in the world of plays and props, things are not always what they appear to be.

Hellcats!

Before you rush to the theatrical setting of Phantom Hellcat, take a moment to check out the scenography. Today, we’ll go through some of the props that will witness your triumph or fall.

The mechanism of the Sun and Moon explicitly alludes to the elements of theater scenography. Thanks to this, the day and night cycle changes symbolically. The style of its elements alludes to the play’s theme and one of our inspirations for the whole level—the classic story about Dracula.

For the clock tower, we were looking for a way to combine theater convention with the realism of our world. We were mainly inspired by gothic castle architecture.

You’ve seen Jolene in Phantom Hellcat’s trailer and screenshots, but did you pay close attention to her look? Today we would like you to take a look at the badges on her jacket.

The badges reflect various elements of the young woman’s life and are reminders of the game’s setting in the 90s. The cassette and the skull represent Jo’s love for music, and the boxer glove is a reference to her skills in martial arts. The rocket represents her intelligence as it’s connected to NASA and space travel.

We have a treat for you today. Here’s an art piece with Jolene’s early look as she’s plunging into the magical world of theater. For comparison, you can see the final piece next to it.

We wanted to find a dynamic, aggressive pose to show that Joe’s ready for a fight with the forces of evil who have taken the theater over. The surroundings are composed of theater scenography and the biomes Jo will traverse during her play.

The key art shows the combination of two worlds—the real one and a magical theater fantasy. You can clearly see the walkman in it, an item Jo always takes with her for a battle. The masks are a metaphor for the magic power she will gain.
