Vassals could be small AI settlements spread randomly around maps, once these settlements main structures are taken down to a certain percentage of their life, they would switch their alliance to the attacking player. It was more fun than I expected it to be. You did a lot right. Combat feels great, the units are varied and balanced. The factions are meaningfully different. Resource management is unique. The one glaring flaw would be the trivial AI. Even on hard mode, it's a breeze. They never provide a challenge. They don't use the stronger unit types.
