Hello everyone. I’m Rareș from the Bear team and this is a little end of the year update about Bear and Breakfast and the people behind it.

We’ve been keeping quiet these past weeks and months, and like last time, I’d like to apologize for the radio silence. It’s been hard to focus on anything other than the ongoing issues we’ve been facing.

It's been a year since we first posted[x.com] about the serious health issues that our team is facing, namely our lead artist having been diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. For the three of us, confronting this situation has been difficult.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a positive update to share at this time. We’re still dealing with the consequences of the disease affecting our colleague, friend and loved one as best we can while trying to keep a steady workflow and positive outlook.

Work on Bear and Breakfast, its upcoming update, future plans for both the game and the studio as a whole have all been affected. The pace at which we’ve been able to work on the promised features has been impacted, and while we continue to push through this, the game is still being updated with fixes for bugs and issues that you've been reporting (thank you).

I wish I could offer a more in-depth update on our situation, but that’s all that I can share at the moment. Once we’re past this difficult time, I hope I’ll be able to go into more details.


In case you missed it, we just announced a new campaign through Makeship for the Hank Hoodie[bear.game]! They’ve been excellent to work with for our past Plushie campaigns, and this hoodie has been in the works for a long time. After our most recent patch, we uncovered a few issues that had been haunting us for quite a while which we decided to throw together in another patch.

09 OCT 2024

• Fixed an issue with undoing changes on room edits, which consisted of removing tiles from under objects with sub objects (tables, campfires, etc), causing annoying furniture duplication and more.
  
• Fixed a couple of places in which Hank could have gotten stuck in Blackmoss.
  
• Reenabled the Save Rollback feature.
  
• [Japanese] Fixed missing translations for some of the most recently added quests (seasonal and recycler)

Hello everyone. This is not a political management spinoff game with Bears (although..), but it is an update about Bear and Breakfast and the team of people behind it.

I’d like to start by apologizing for the radio silence. We’ve been focusing on health related things that have left us kind of physically and mentally exhausted. It’s been a while since we’ve told you what’s been happening with the team and Bear and Breakfast, so it’s time to rectify that.

We’re doing okay. Our Art Director, Ioana’s been undergoing treatment for breast cancer for the past 8 months and will soon go through surgery, followed by radiation therapy. We are currently cautious, but hopeful.

Work on the free update we announced some time ago is still ongoing and we’re doing our best to have it ready to ship this year. We have a couple of smaller, but special announcements (not update related) coming up sooner, in probably less than a month.

That’s the quick summary. If you’d like to know more about the situation, here’s a few more details:


In case you missed it, a few months ago we announced that our Art Director Ioana has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer. Stage 4 means that the cancer is not isolated to just its point of origin, but it has also spread to other parts of her body. In her case, it spread to two of her bones. It was devastating news, especially for Ioana, but also for myself and the rest of our team.

Since our last update, she has been steadily following the treatment provided by her oncologist and is feeling okay. Early signs are positive and indicate the treatment is at least partially effective, which has recently prompted her doctor to recommend surgery and radiation therapy. Ioana is now preparing to go through that surgery in a couple of weeks and her recovery will inform our next steps. In short, we are cautious but hopeful that things are going in the right direction.


Work on Bear and Breakfast has been slow, but relatively steady. Our support team (thank you Tass) and Andu have been keeping tabs on bug reports, as well as tinkering away at the update. In general, working on the game has been a good excuse to not think about health stuff.
Our plan is to release it for free once we’re happy with the amount of content and testing we can get done.

We're pushing yet another small patch fixing some issues that were reported through our Support Page[armor.ag].

28 FEB 2024

• Fixed Guests not using the Movie Theater.
  
• Fixed loss of control in Build Mode caused by using Mouse & Keyboard to open a Build Menu panel, right after the selection was made using a controller.
  
• Adjusted control system to keep Controller scheme layout if no control scheme is detected, as opposed to fallback to Mouse & Keyboard (even though some platforms don’t have M&K).
  
• Fixed loss of control while in Builder -> Main Inventory after using “R” to jump to scene while having a furniture object currently picked.
  
• Fixed Inventory Panels sometimes resetting their scroll status, losing focus of previously selected inventory item.
  
• Adjusted Inventory Extras and Filters controller hints. Made them bigger, and positioned them outside the frame.
  
• Fixed Containers losing their contents when destroying them right after creating them, without them getting the chance to serialize via Save or Scene Change.
  
• (Mouse & Keyboard) Blocked the ability to select a menu item while having a picked object, causing mayhem in the UI.

• Fixed Travel to handle entering Timber Crossing from Sawdust when Barbara's Cutscene is scheduled.
  
• Fixed item duplication when reverting a room's edits after removing furniture with a full inventory.
  
• Updated Progression Check to force move Fin when he's stuck in Timber Crossing.

Hello bear aficionados,

Last month we shared the unfortunate news that our team is dealing with some very serious health issues.

Here's an update about that: Ioana is doing well. After going through about a thousand tests to confirm the type of cancer we're dealing with, she's started and finished her first round of systemic treatment and she'll be doing a couple more months of that before we do another round of tests to see how well she's been (hopefully) kicking its ass.

It's still very early, but we are hopeful and also incredibly grateful for the many many kind messages and the overwhelming support!


As far as Bear and Breakfast goes, we're very much dedicated to delivering the expansion update as soon as possible. It's a slower process now, but if things go well on the treatment side we hope to complete the work sooner rather than later. This has been a weird year and your continued support has meant the world. I keep saying it, but it's true.

For those looking to get into the game for the first time, Bear and Breakfast is currently the most discounted ever at -35% during the Steam Winter Sale!


Lastly, earlier this year we launched a bunch of merch including the extremely small and dumb Hank Plush, which a lot of you already got their hands on. We've received a lot of messages asking if the Hank Plush will ever return, so we'll be looking to see if that's possible in 2024!
