My wrench disappeared after taking out the first set of screws. Has anyone else had this problem? If so, is there a workaround?

I'm stuck at the cliff and I can't do anything. The cursor changes colour over the bridge and on a spot at the far end of the cliff, but inspecting them or using them does nothing, the character doesn't even say anything. The walkthrough suggests I should look at the mountains, but nothing happens when I move the cursor over them. Have done everything in the woods, looked at tree tops and talked with Fred etc....

I'm having trouble connecting the two ropes. I've got the first rope placed, but the second one won't connect no matter where I click.
